Exam Preparation

The SAT, MCAT, LSAT, GMAT, GRE, IELTS, and TOEFL are some of the most common and significant international entry tests. These are necessary for enrollment at universities and colleges in numerous nations throughout the world. There may occasionally be a requirement for a mix of one or more of these tests or examinations with others unique to that nation and its educational system.

IELTS & TOEFL

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are undoubtedly at the top of the list when it comes to the sheer volume of students who need to take one or the other to prove their English language ability. The largest number of institutions and colleges, including the top 100 in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, accept TOEFL results. For admittance into the majority of prestigious institutions and colleges abroad, as well as occasionally for immigration requirements, the IELTS is a required exam for Indians and other non-native English speakers, particularly in the Commonwealth countries. The British Council administers the IELTS, which is given over four times a month in 71 centers across the nation.

IELTS Score

The scores of an IELTS examination are assigned, in terms of bands, and the range of the score is from 0 to 9 in which the O score is given to the least performing, and 9 bands is given to the expert in the language.

The passing score of the candidate or the minimum score requirement will depend on the University to which the candidate has applied or the immigration program through which he is applying for selection.

However, a score of 6 is a competent score and is the least required score in most places. The test is usually conducted in the below-mentioned 4 categories and a candidate has to qualify in all.

IELTS Test Components:-

The test has 4 components even and the total time taken to complete the test is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Reading:

The IELTS Reading test contains 40 questions. Each correctly answered question fetches 1 mark. Therefore, the maximum score you can achieve is 40. A band score ranging from Band 1 to Band 9 is then awarded on the basis of this score.

Time Required: 60 minutes

Writing:

When marking the Writing section of the test, examiners use detailed assessment criteria which describe written and spoken performance at each of the 9 IELTS bands. Examiners give a band score for each of the 4 areas: Task Achievement (for Task 1), Task Response (for Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. These 4 are given equal-weighted. The writing component consists of 2 parts, one is Academic and the other one is General. Most students opt for the Academic pattern which is a bit tough, but in the General IELTS, the candidate has to undergo a Letter writing session. Task 2 carries more weightage in your final band score than Task 1. 1. Remember: illegible handwriting will reduce your final score.

Time Required: 60 minutes

Speaking :

Examiners award a band score for each of the 4 criterion areas: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. These 4 get equal weightage. There are three parts of the test and are in the form of an interview. The interview will most probably seem like a friendly conversation that typically covers some aspects of your past, present, and future situations.

Time Required: 11 to 14 minutes

Listening :

The test has 40 questions. The listening materials are recorded on a cassette tape/CD/DVD and you will get a chance to hear it just once. When the recorded material ends you will have just 10 minutes to copy your answers into the answer sheet.

Time Required: 30 minutes

In the US, many graduate programs, particularly those in engineering and the sciences, have this prerequisite for entrance.

GMAT

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), which is a requirement for admission to business universities, must be taken by management aspirants. The typical GMAT score is between 570 and 580. However, a score of at least 700 is almost a must for admission to top schools. Recent additions to the test, such Integrated Reasoning, have raised the stakes and increased competition. The GMAT test is offered in more than 500 sites across the world. Slots must be reserved in advance.

SAT

If a person has not finished an equivalent, they must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), which comes in two varieties: the Reasoning Test, which assesses basic writing abilities and grammar, and the Subject Test, which evaluates a candidate’s understanding of the subject of their choice. The College Board of the United States of America owns, created, and administers the SAT. Seven times a year, usually on the first Saturday of October, November, December, January, March, May, and June, the SAT is given in the USA. Most other nations observe the same dates.

Medical Test:-

An immigration medical exam is a necessary part of immigrating to the United States and becoming a permanent resident (green card holder). Sometimes called a green card medical exam, the appointment is a routine part of the process to ensure public safety and remove the grounds for inadmissibility for intending immigrants. Certain diseases of public health significance make an individual inadmissible to the United States. The exam is the process to remove these grounds of inadmissibility.

Purpose of an Immigration Medical Exam

The medical grounds of inadmissibility, the medical examination of foreign nationals, and the vaccinations administered to foreign nationals are designed to protect the health of the United States population. The immigration medical examination, the resulting medical examination report, and the vaccination record provide the information U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) uses to determine if a foreign national meets the health-related standards for admissibility.

Any of these four basic medical conditions may make an applicant inadmissible on health-related grounds:

– Communicable disease of public health significance

– An immigrant’s failure to show proof of required vaccinations

– Physical or mental disorder with associated harmful behavior

– Drug abuse or addiction

What to Take to your Medical Exam

In preparation for the medical examination, you take the following items:

– Valid passport or other government-issued photo identification

– Vaccination records

– Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record (if adjusting status)

– The required fee (varies by doctor)

– Required number of U.S. passport photos (if applying abroad – check with consular office)

– Report of the condition and any special education or supervision requirements (if anyone in your family is immigrating with learning disabilities)

– List of medications (if you are being treated for a chronic medical condition or taking medications on a regular basis)

– Tuberculosis certificate from your doctor (if you’ve had a previous positive skin test for tuberculosis) proving that you were adequately treated

– Certificate of clearance signed by a doctor or public health official, proving that you were adequately treated (if you have had syphilis)

– If you have a history of harmful or violent behavior resulting in injury to people or animals, information that will allow the doctor to determine whether the behavior was related to a psychiatric or medical problem, or to drug or alcohol use

– If you have been treated or hospitalized for psychiatric or mental illness, or alcohol or drug abuse, written certification including the diagnosis, length of treatment, and your prognosis

Physical Examination

The doctor will then give you a physical examination. Typically, the physical exam includes looking at your eyes, ears, nose and throat, extremities, heart, lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes, skin, and external genitalia. The doctor will also order a chest X-ray and blood test. Children will generally be excused from the X-ray and blood test requirement. If you are pregnant, contact your respective embassy or consular office to inquire about a postponement.

Mental Examination

The doctor will even perform a mental status exam that assesses your intelligence, thought, comprehension, judgment, affect, mood, and behavior. Applicants who have physical or mental disorders and harmful behavior associated with those disorders are inadmissible. The inadmissibility ground is divided into two subcategories:

– Current physical or mental disorders, with associated harmful behavior. – Past physical or mental disorders, with associated harmful behavior that is likely to recur or lead to other harmful behavior.

Upon Completion

When the examination is complete, the doctor will prepare a form provided by USCIS with results and findings. In many cases, the doctor will send the results directly to the consulate when you are applying for a visa overseas. If your immigration medical exam is inside the United States, the civil surgeon will give you Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, in a sealed envelope. Do not open the envelope under any circumstance. Submit the medical exam along with Form I-485, Application to Adjust Status. If you have already filed your adjustment of status application, submit the envelope at the USCIS green card interview. The results of your immigration medical exam are generally valid for two years. Specifically, Form I-693 is valid only when a civil surgeon signs it no more than 60 days before the date an applicant files the application for the underlying immigration benefit; and USCIS adjudicates the application within two years from the date of the civil surgeon’s signature.
